Marah

The word ‘Marah’ means bitterness. The first mention of Marah in the bible is in Exodus 15:22–25. The Israelites could not drink the water and they complained. God showed a tree to Moses and he cast it into the water to become sweet. Isn’t it ironic that Naomi refers herself to as bitter water, and sees how God did the same thing he did to that bitter water to her life?

The word ‘Marah’ reminds us that bitterness destroys the usefulness of both water and human life that is poisoned by it. When we stop trusting in the goodness of God and see only our own limited resources, we can become bitter.

I want to encourage you with this blog. Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Don’t be too quick to give up on God. In that bitter situation, God can use it to turn your life around if you can just believe him one more time. Naomi has given up, but thanks to God for a good daughter-in-law that still believes in her despite all she can see…
