Guns do Affect this Country

Why do we have guns? What is the purpose of a gun? To protect ourselves? No, in all honesty the purpose of a gun is to kill. A gun is such a dangerous weapon, why should people be able to own such a powerful weapon? Clearly we can’t handle the weapon because on Sunday night October 1, 2017 there was a mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada. 500 people injured and 59 dead. It was the Route 91 Harvest Festival that was going on that night a three day country music festival that was supposed to be nothing but a good time, but then turned out to be the worst day for many Americans lives. This was one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. A man named Stephen Paddock was the shooter. He had checked into the Mandalay Bay Hotel on Thursday September 28 in Las Vegas and managed to get 23 guns into the hotel. This is ridiculous, how can someone manage to get 23 guns into a hotel without getting noticed? This is why we do need more gun control laws or no guns at all. I am a firm believer in world peace and want nothing more than all of this inhumane and craziness to come to a stop.
 After the Vegas Shooting had happened Hillary Clinton called out for tougher gun laws. I agree I do think we need more gun laws because mass shooting keep on happening in our country and they will keep on happening until we create a more relevant law for guns. According to the Gun Violence Archive website, in the year 2017 there have been 277 mass shootings, 47,665 total number of incidents involving guns, 11,937 deaths involving guns (“Gun Violence Archive, 2012”). This is what our government is for right, to help solve crises and problems in America. If these numbers of deaths and injuries aren’t enough for Politicians to realize that maybe America should come up with some stricter gun laws then I do not know how much longer our country can survive. In an a recent article German Lopez talks about how we can avoid mass shootings she says;

“In the case of gun violence, there is something the federal government can do. We know, for instance, that America has more gun violence than other developed nations; we also know part of the reason for that is America has more guns, and the research very clearly shows more guns mean more gun deaths. So reducing the number of guns — by limiting access to them, or by immediately cutting the supply of them through, for example, buyback programs — would very likely lead to fewer gun deaths.”

She used firearm deaths toward UK levels as an example by having much stricter gun laws that in 2013 the U.S. would’ve saved 33,000 lives (Lopez).

Donald Trump’s opinion on gun control has changed over the years when the Oregon’s Umpqua Community College shooting happened, President Donald Trump said that the outcome would have been better if teachers had been equipped with firearms. “It was a gun-free zone,” President Donald Trump said at a rally shortly after the shooting. “I will tell you if you had a couple of the teachers or somebody with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off.” But now since the Las Vegas shooting he is considering more gun control laws, we don’t know what yet but he said “that the U.S. will be talking about gun laws as time goes by” so this is a very good thing because then that means they are talking about a solution on what they can improve on to make this country better.

Yes, I understand it is a person’s right to protect themselves and I think that with that a person can have a certain kind of gun and there should be restrictions on some guns because obviously things are getting out of control. A man was a able to get 23 guns to the 32nd floor of an hotel room. I can only speak for myself but I know that I am tired of turning on the News and hearing about how someone just shot up a school, a gas station, or a concert. I am tired of seeing people lose their loved ones and innocent people dying, it is sad and inhuman. Making more gun laws won’t solve the whole big problem of mass shootings and what not, and people will still be able to access guns in secret because people always find a way around the law, but it will be harder get a hold of a gun and the the rates of mass shootings will go down, The United States need a law of some sort that will help with the percentage of mass shootings to go down.
