Eye contact and a smile might be nice …

When I was in line for coffee this morning, I saw the cashier take a young man’s order in front of me. He asked for “an egg and bacon sandwich” with no please, thank you or even eye contact. How rude!

It doesn’t take that much effort to be polite, and it can help you in your search for career and life success. People are more likely to help you if you are polite to them. All it takes is some eye contact and a simple acknowledgement of gratitude.

I remember reading once that an NFL team spoke to the chauffeurs who drove the job candidates around town to evaluate their politeness. I hope those candidates said their “pleases” and “thank you’s”! We may not be candidates for NFL playing or coaching positions, but job interviewers certainly appreciate when an interview candidate is polite and professional.

So please ensure that you are being polite not only to your job interviewers and your networking contacts, but also to anyone that serves or helps you in some way. You never know what it could lead to …
