Cute dog leaping for joy at learning Midjourney AI! AI generated image, created with Midjourney.

Hi!I have received feedback that many individuals who are interested in creating AI images may feel daunted, puzzled, or uncertain about where to begin. It’s likely that most people have heard of and seen the results of AI image generation, and are curious about its capabilities and how to utilize them.

The range of potential uses for AI generated images is vast — from personal projects to creative inspiration, business graphics to website design, and even creating passive income — the possibilities are endless.

As an artist who frequently utilizes AI tools for my work, I have found Midjourney AI to be the most user-friendly and efficient image generator. While I am not affiliated with Midjourney or any other AI applications, and do not receive any compensation from them, I still wanted to share a beginner’s guide on how to access this personal favorite of mine. Additionally, I also enjoy using Night Cafe AI because they offer free daily credits for image generation.

If you’re interested in using Midjourney, here is a guide to get you started. Keep in mind that you will need to generate 100 images through Midjourney on discord before you can access the website application.

This post is free for anyone to read, as it contains AI generated written content. While I would love to have written a detailed guide myself, it is much more efficient to use chatGPT’s assistance in creating a clear and helpful guide. Please note that all of my other content behind a paywall is written by me and not generated by AI.

  • Verify your email address by following the link sent to your email.

2. Download the Discord App (Optional):

  • You can use Discord through your web browser, but for a better experience, download the app on your computer or mobile device from Discord’s download page.

3. Log In to Discord:

  • Open the Discord app or website and log in using your new account credentials.

Step 2: Joining the Midjourney Discord Server

  1. Get the Invite Link: https://discord.com/invite/midjourney

2. Join the Server:

  • Click on the invite link and then click “Accept Invite”. This will take you to the Midjourney Discord server.

Step 3: Understanding the Server Layout

  1. Familiarize Yourself with Channels:
  • On the left sidebar, you’ll see various channels. Channels are like rooms where specific topics are discussed.
  • Look for channels like #newbies, #announcements, and #rules to get started.

2. Read the Rules

  • In the #rules channel, read through the guidelines to understand what is expected of members.

Step 4: Generating Your First AI Image

  1. Locate a Newbie Channel:
  • Find and click on a channel labeled #newbies (e.g., #newbies-1, #newbies-2).

2. Using the Bot:

  • In the text input box at the bottom of the screen, type the /imagine command followed by a description of the image you want to generate.
  • For example, type /imagine a serene landscape with mountains and a lake at sunset.
  • Press “Enter” to send your command.

3. Wait for the Results:

  • The Midjourney bot will process your request and generate four images based on your prompt. This usually takes less than a minute.

4. Upscaling Images:

  • Once the images are generated, you can choose to upscale (enhance) any of them for better quality. Click on the button under the image you like labeled “U1”, “U2”, “U3”, or “U4” (corresponding to the first, second, third, and fourth images).

5. Variations:

  • You can also create variations of an image by clicking “V1”, “V2”, “V3”, or “V4”.

6. Save Your Image:

  • Click on the final upscaled image and then right click on the enlarged image and select “Save Image As…” to download it to your device.

Step 5: Engaging with the Community

  1. Share Your Creations:
  • Feel free to share your images in the appropriate channels and see what others are creating.

2. Ask for Help:

  • If you have any questions, you can ask in the #help or #support channels. The community and moderators are generally very supportive.
  • Explore and Experiment:
  • Try different prompts, explore various channels, and participate in community events to get the most out of Midjourney.
