Openfort is bringing frictionless gaming accounts to Beam

When you start playing a game, it should be simple and easy. This is at the heart of our mission with Beam, and it’s a mindset we share with Openfort. We’re proud to work together with Openfort, the headless gaming wallet infrastructure, and collaborate on bringing blockchain primitives like account abstraction to the Beam network.

Abstracting complexity

Openfort is a Barcelona/SF-based company that is building a solution to abstract the complexities of interacting with any blockchain. Joan and Jaume, the two passionate siblings behind the operation, started out on the road towards this project after becoming fascinated by the topic of Ethereum primitives. They felt that the most exciting one was account abstraction, developed in the ERC-4337 standard.

This standard unlocks new flexibility around wallets on the Ethereum blockchain, which translates to other EVM chains such as Avalanche. Whereas most wallets these days such as MetaMask or hardware wallets like Ledger require practices such as private keys in the form of a 12-word seed phrase. If these keys are lost, the assets are gone forever. With this new standard, ERC-4337, wallets are now smart and allow developers to rotate keys for enhanced usability and use cases like social recovery.

Blockworks described the new standard in their article Ethereum’s ERC-4337 Account Abstraction Smart Contract is Live:

“For some users, this may simply mean getting the user experience of a bank — where someone can always help recover your bank account even if you lose your password,” Weiss, an author of the ERC-4337 proposal, told Blockworks. “For more sophisticated users, it could mean adding more controls or features to your account.”

Openfort is taking full advantage of this standard and delivering all possible features that will empower developers to bring a rich experience to the end-user. Having a clear focus on gaming, they allow game developers to directly create their own gaming wallet themselves without having to deal with the complex jargon of an Ethereum standard.

Offering end-to-end ownership, Openfort’s programmable accounts allows any game developer to redefine their relationship with players directly. Players can now own in-game assets thanks to the traceability of the blockchain and doing so within an infrastructure that is open-sourced, transparent and user friendly.

Simple and clean

Openfort is currently fully deployed on the Beam mainnet. That means that within the Beam SDK, the contracts that game developers use to incorporate into their games, the Openfort smart accounts are included. Today, this comes down to account infrastructure, which is one of the most basic practices in any game. The first thing you do when you start playing a game is set up your account to log your progression and view your belongings.

Until Beam is fully up and running — with the launch title The Lords of Light (Raini) deploying at the end of September — the best way to see Openfort’s solution in action is to take a look at their demo. This takes the form of a simple dungeon crawler that utilizes their infrastructure — whether that’s web, launcher or mobile based.

One-stop-shop for game developers

Openfort is delivering plenty more features which will become available through the Beam SDK — features such as allowing others to sponsor transaction costs on behalf of others, which opens up the possibility that games could sponsor the costs of transacting on behalf of their players.

Another exciting feature is the fiat on and offramp. These days, gamers are used to making in-app purchases in a frictionless manner. Having the ability to do so within blockchain-empowered games is currently a time-hefty job. With Openfort’s proposed solutions, however, this will become a matter of a couple of taps on the screen.

Lastly, the ability to interact with any marketplace, but more explicitly with Sphere, is also an important milestone for the ecosystem in order to let players transact their in-game assets.

We’re thrilled to collaborate closely with Openfort, and simply can’t wait to empower the next generation of games. Simple, easy and frictionless.
