A bad manager will always be a bad manager if he is not willing to see his position as collaborative and a constant learning forum. I have had all types of managers, and the best ones always let their strengths shine, kept us informed of everything that was not confidential, and treated us as equals.
My greatest wish has been for companies to actually stop pushing everyone toward the management track so hard and spend more time on management alternatives. There is nothing wrong with being #2. There are some, like myself, who prefer it.
