Grace Hopper was born in New York City in 1906. She attended Vassar College, where she earned a degree in mathematics and physics in 1928. She went on to earn a master’s degree in mathematics from Yale University in 1930 and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale in 1934. Hopper then worked as a professor at Vassar College, teaching mathematics and computer science.

During World War II, Hopper joined the U.S. Navy as a member of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) program. She was assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project at Harvard University, where she worked on the Mark I computer, one of the first computers ever built. Hopper’s work on the Mark I involved creating programs that could be used by non-experts to perform complex calculations.

After the war, Hopper continued to work on computer programming. She joined the Harvard faculty and worked on the development of the first compiler, a program that translates high-level programming languages into machine code. Her work on the compiler made it possible for people with little technical expertise to write complex programs, which paved the way for the widespread adoption of computers in business and industry.

Hopper’s pioneering work in computer programming led to the development of several high-level programming languages, including COBOL and FORTRAN. Her work on these languages made it possible for programmers to write complex programs quickly and easily, without having to worry about the low-level details of computer hardware.

Throughout her career, Hopper broke down barriers and paved the way for women in tech. She was the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University and the first woman to achieve the rank of Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy.

Today, Hopper’s legacy continues to inspire and impact the tech industry. The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, an annual conference that celebrates women in tech, was named in her honor. Her pioneering work in computer programming and her determination to break down barriers continue to inspire generations of technologists.
