A few quick things to note before we dive in…

First, I’m white. Second, the list I’m sharing with you (found below) is part of a much longer article of mine regarding “How to See White Privilege”, which you can read here. Third, I started researching this list in early 2019 because — after a confrontation at my theater — I recognized that I had internalized racism, had benefited from white privilege, and decided that I wanted to learn, grow, and change.

That meant doing research. A lot of it.

In my other life, I’m a technology writer here on…

Introduction: Writing A New American Chapter

The recent and very brutal deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor in The United States are — sadly — only the latest chapter in a brutal and embarrassing story about race and privilege in this country that is over 400 years old.

I wanted to contribute something to our national conversation that might help — even in some small way — to write a new and more just chapter in our ongoing story. …

Why We’re Not Talking About The Realities of Pregnancy

A Long Time Ago in a City Far, Far Away…

It was the Spring of 2011 when I met Mary. Springtime in Los Angeles is when the city really shines: the flowers and jacarandas start to bloom, it’s warm but not suffocatingly hot, and when it rains, the air gets scrubbed so clean that — from the top of The Getty Center — you can see clear out to Mt. San Jacinto almost 90 miles away. It’s pure magic.

I met Mary the old-fashioned way: at a dinner party, surrounded by our longtime, mutual friends. The instant comfort of her knowing many of the same people as I did was…

For decades, I’ve been hired to set-up and fix entire networks of computers for people and companies who are too busy or impatient to deal with machines. Being in the field for over 25 years has made one fact absolutely clear: people don’t like computers unless they work. If your computer gives you access to all of your email, photos, and files, then life is good, praise God, and let’s have a beer.

But if your computer prevents you from getting to your data? Well, then a fountain of black, sludgy evil…

Life is rich. It’s also richly ironic.

There are people who believe that money is the root of all evil. They preach that one cannot have a fulfilling spiritual or religious life and also accumulate wealth. Quite the opposite, actually: for these individuals, wealth corrupts and extreme wealth corrupts extremely.

There are people on the other side of the spectrum who worship money. They devote much of their professional lives to the pursuit and accumulation of wealth, sometimes even as their personal and spiritual lives fail spectacularly.

Personally (and pardon the pun), I don’t…

Dear Democrats:

Please, everyone: calm down. Have a cup of chamomile. Remember to breathe, especially right after it rains when the air is fresh. Hang out with puppies or kittens if you have to. It all helps.

And, right now, we need all the help we can get.

To My Friends Who Support Bernie: Centrists like Buttigieg and Klobuchar consolidating/rallying around another centrist like Biden isn’t “the party apparatus trying to squeeze out Bernie”… Rather, it’s candidates who are like-minded philosophically finding and helping one another. You may not like neo-liberals or centrists and that’s fine: you don’t need to…
