Thank you so much for saying exactly what I said when I saw this story. It’s a gut-wrenching lesson that we as a society can’t seem to comprehend. My family just got back from a beach vacation, and believe me, I said no to my 10 year old son many times over the popular thrill rides that are there. A giant slingshot, bungee jumping, parasailing….I’m sorry, but a 10 year old isn’t savvy enough to assess all the risks, let alone have the instinct or observational skills to detect when something is awry with safety restraints, operator negligence, etc. And if an emergency were to arise in that situation? A 10 year old is not capable of staying level headed enough to ensure their own personal safety. My kid may hate me for it now, but I’m not about to allow him to risk his life when he isn’t even old enough to realize how valuable and vulnerable it is. That is my lot as a parent.
