You made it! But… where did it all go?
It’s safe to say 2018 was one of the most transformative years on the books for META. If you’ve been alongside for the ride in any capacity, we truly can’t thank you enough for your support. It really means the world to us.
In 2018, we brought to life some seriously incredible new projects, collaborating with the likes of creative luminaries St. Vincent, Troye Sivan, Shek Wes, Android Jones, and many more while activating some of our favorite brands including Spotify, HP, Rihanna’s Diamond Ball and Clair & Lionel Foundation, Cadillac and beyond.
Below is a (relatively) quick run-down of our year in words and gifs. Don’t be shy… why not click a link or three?
Thank you again — and let’s show 2019 what the Art of Being There is all about!
Justin “jb” Bolognino — META Founder/CEO
A (RELATIVELY) QUICK RECAP
META kicked off 2018 in teaming up with long-time collaborator (Brooklyn Bowl) and Art Director Tristam Steinberg to produce the video screens for a next-level storefront behind some of the most famous windows in the world at Saks Fifth Avenue. More here.
COACHELLA PREMIERE OF FLATLAND
Premiering at Coachella, META founder Justin Bolognino directed this seven minute journey through consciousness with a stunning score by St. Vincent, and art direction and CGI by Dev Harlan, Sougwen, Prism, and VolvoxLabs. Over 100,000 people lined up for hours to experience the 120’, 550 capacity immersive dome experience powered by HP. More here.
ANDROID JONES BRINGS THE PLAYA IN VR TO THE SMITHSONIAN RENWICK
Few artists have captured the infinite imagination and Spirit of Burning Man quite like Android Jones and Vision Agency, who brought in META to produce their incredible retrospective at the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery in DC. More here.
TROYE SIVAN IN FULL BLOOM
When Troye Sivan asked Spotify if they could build a “Bloom” listening experience in a bubble for the album launch, enter: META. We teamed up with inflatable masters Pneuhaus to build a custom dome made out bubbles, set in amongst the breathtaking overlook of Baldwin Hills in the heart of Los Angeles. More here.
LIL’ YACHTY & SPOTIFY
The first of three Spotify experiences in 2018, we dropped Lil’ Yachty’s latest album with an intimate experience for his biggest fans in his hometown of ATL. Playing on his water-themed parting of the seas, META projected custom content on a massive screen of falling water to kick this hot new album off with a splash. More here.
THE 2018 LAB AT PANORAMA
For three years running, META has been tasked to bring the NYC creative technology community together to collaborate on immersive multi-sensory experience set amongst Goldenvoice’s (Coachella, Stagecoach) Panorama Music, Art, and Technology Festival. This year we brought the LAB into the trees, creating a totally new, decentralized dynamic to the production, creating six completely distinct immersive worlds to life with leading NYC shops The Windmill Factory, Superbright, Smooth Technology, Magenta Field, and the NYC premiere of Flatland featuring St. Vincent. More here.
For the second year in a row, Rihanna’s Diamond Ball and the Clara & Lionel Foundation asked us to deliver an unforgettable experience that shows off the foundation’s inspiring work serving humanitarian crisis and refugees. To bring their vision to life, META curated HFour to bring their interactive projection mapped experience Quantal Quilt to Cipriani in the Financial District for a sophisticated entry to the space like no other.
SPOTIFY SHECK WES
Spotify came to META to tell the story of a young, Harlem bred hip-hop artist named Shek Wes, who’s mud-themed record “Mudboy” was about to drop on the world’s largest music streaming platform. We floated and lit large-scale Shek photos in the most incredible of venues, Harlem Parish, and built an interactive visual show projected 30’ tall behind the stage, of Shek “dissolving into mud” with motion design effects by META creative technologist Eric Chang. More here.
DROPPING CHERRIES WITH URBAN DECAY
Paper Magazine brought META in to create an immersive, cherry-themed large scale experience. We strategized a three-walled video system that allowed attendees to interact with falling cherries. To take the design and tech to the next level, HFour came in, and the results came up all cherries. More here.
Capping off a great year of META + Hfour collabs, we Executive Produced one of the keystone brand experiences for Cadillac at the now fully-realized ComplexCon in Long Beach, CA. Hfour design massive mirror-balls that sat over the new XT4 model sedan, a custom LED floor animation loop and gorgeous backdrop design. More here.
As a final hurrah, META launched our first “META STUDIOS” project, with a experience product we designed in-house as a means of creating new immersive experiences owned and operated by META. Thanks to our Presenting Sponsor RYOT, META launching this inter-dimensional dome film festival at the Ace Hotel with a bang. More here.
