Permaculture is a set of design principle inspired by the patterns observed in the natural world that allow humans to coexist harmoniously with their surroundings. These principles can be applied to many facets of life, including agriculture, architecture, urban planning and many other areas.
What is an earthship ? The Design Principles
Earthship is considered a sustainable, zero energy building that is built with mostly recycled materials and is designed to be self-sufficient. This type of building uses natural thermal and solar energy to heat and cool the building, while also collecting the rainwater for bathing, washing and watering.
The Earthships are built using tires, aluminium cans, glass bottles and other local materials, recycled or reclaimed from demolished buildings, and instead of concrete cement is used cob, a building material made with clay soil, sand, straws and water, it can be formed into shape by hand without the use of any tools.
Cob walls are ticker than regular drywall and can withstand harsh weather conditions, such as earthquakes, hurricanes or tornadoes and they also store temperature (heat or cold).
An essential feature of permaculture is its focus on sustainability — taking care of the environment today so we can preserve it for future generations to enjoy.
Each earthship has its own renewable “power station” with photovoltaic panels, batteries, charge controller, inverter and a keen awareness of leakage or phantom loads. An Earthship’s electrical needs are approx. 25% of that of a conventional house.
A greenhouse is attached to most Earthships to grow vegetables and herbs for food as well as plants and flowers to beautify the space.
Permaculture teaches us about working with nature rather than against it. With this knowledge, we can design our living spaces in such a way that we not only consume natural resources but also restore them to ensure that we have food to eat and clean water to drink in the future.
