D. Paunkoski makes history while stealing derby in the dying seconds

RMIT PlayFutsal Bundoora Division 1, Round 8 (Autumn Season ‘17)

Barca Boys FC 6–7 Metalurg Lions FC
(HT: Barca Boys FC 4–2 Metalurg Lions FC)

Venue: RMIT Bundoora Futsal Stadium
Attendance: 18

Our boys in red pulled a remarkable comeback once again, to the expense of Barca Boys FC, as man-of-the-match Daniel Paunkoski struck late to secure a dramatic win.

The match came to a lively start as both sides looked promising right from the get go. But it was our opponents who opened the scoring after a rare lapse in defense. Two minutes later, a break on the left side saw the Barca Boys capitalise a great chance to increase the lead by another goal.

Daniel Paunkoski, who had been sitting on 199 goals, finally got in the game, finishing off a nicely worked goal by the Lions to create history and become the first ever player to score their 200th goal for Metalurg Lions FC.

This goal gave the Lions the confidence to equalise the scores and they did so through a brilliant long range rocket by Jovanovski which hit the back of the net. The Barca Boys responded well, hitting the lead once again through a brilliant individual goal. Just before half time, our opponents increased their lead as a long range effort deflected off the unlucky Tomce Paunkoski to make the half time score 4–2.

The persistent Lions started on fire when Nikoloski pulled the score back to 4–3 just seconds after the restart with the assistance of T. Paunkoski and Stankovski. Petrovski was having a much better second half, making key saves and playing his part in the equaliser, releasing D. Paunkoski to play a wonderful one-two play with Stankovski and slotting home the ball into an empty net.

In an incredible turn of events, a stunning free kick left Petrovski in no-man’s-land, allowing the opposition to take the lead for a third time. However, the Lion’s could not be defeated as Nikoloski intercepted the ball at halfway, releasing a wonderful through ball to D. Paunkoski to equalise the game once again.

For the first time in the night, our boys in red took the lead when a perfectly lofted pass by T. Paunkoski found Jovanovski to finish in the bottom corner for a 6–5 lead. As Nikoloski came off injured with seven minutes to go, the task became harder for the Lions. Our Lions were left conceding a sixth goal with only two minutes to go.

And just as we did against Are You Mad two rounds prior, with less than 30 seconds remaining, Petrovski’s pass found T. Puankoski, who then found Stankovski on the right and put it across goal to Jovanovski. Jovanovski, using a traditional cutback, found the fiery D. Paunkoski to finish in close range, sending the Lions’ fans into a frenzy of celebrations. With seconds to go, Stankovski’s crucial block ensured that there would be no more drama this late in the game and secured a famous derby win, much to the delight of our supporters.

We’d like to thank everyone who attended and cheer our boys in red on last night. Your support does not go unnoticed and it’s always greatly appreciated.
