With all the falderal about cultural appropriation no wonder white writers do not write about non-white cultures. That, and most writers do it for monetary reasons. Writing that appeals to 13% of the population usually will not pay. I remember going to Dragon Con in 2006, I saw seven black people out of the thousands in attendance. Four of them where a young family, the husband a true nerd, his wife was OK with it and the two young children were staring wide eyed at all those white people.
One of the Hugo winners was an Native American author writing about a character who was posing as a native American in a virtual reality experience. He meets and is then replaced by an authentic Native American. Could a European American write about that without seeming condescending?
