Green Islands, a regular publication from Summit Metro Parks that first debuted in 1960, has a new look.

Starting next month, the former quarterly magazine will become a bi-monthly publication that includes information about wildlife, research, programs, events and more. The park district is also phasing out its monthly programs-only guide after the August 2017 issue. The program guide has been around more than 15 years.

Green Islands is the park district’s signature publication.

“This makes us more sustainable,” spokesperson Nathan Eppink said of combining the two publications. “Instead of printing and mailing 16 times in a calendar year, we’ll be doing that just six times a year. We’ll save significantly on postage, and we’re able to streamline our production schedules.”

The new-look Green Islands will mail to subscribers next week and include information about September and October programs.

The monthly Programs & Events Guide has been eliminated.

What does the name of the publication mean? In the debut issue 57 years ago, then-chair of the Board of Park Commissioners, Forrest D. Myers, wrote: Our Metropolitan Parks suggest green islands of rest and relaxation in a sea of subdivisions, highways, and industrial development. They provide harbors of refuge against the turmoil and bustle of modern urban life.

Eppink said subscribers to the previous publications do not need to sign up to receive the new Green Islands; it will still be mailed to them. The park district only mails to Summit County residents and businesses because the organization is funded by Summit County tax dollars.
