Being a Producer

Why it’s difficult

Producing or creating anything, whether it’s software or any kind of content, is probably easier said than done. Here are a couple reasons why.

Producing means thinking, trying and putting in effort. Which means your brain needs to be constantly active and searching for solutions. One thing I’ve also noticed when producing work, is that you’re also learning something new in the process. For example, when you write an article, you’re jotting down thoughts in your head you might have not really put a lot of thought into. This might lead you to discover new concepts and ideas you can work on.

Consuming is easier than producing.

Consuming on the other hand needs your ears, eyes and a little bit of thought. Therefore, it’s an easier task.

  • Watching Youtube videos is easier than recording a skit.
  • Reading Medium articles is a lot easier than trying to producing your own content.
  • Reading a book is easier than writing one.

That’s why there will always be more producers than consumers.

Producing work means going through a whole range of emotions.

  • Will my work be good enough?
  • Will this book become a best-seller?
  • Will this actually work?
  • When I will I ever finish this huge project?

It’s harder to produce, especially if you’re super critical about your work.

One thing I’ve learned though, is that producers finish. Although they realize their work isn’t so perfect or doesn’t really meet their initial expectations, they ensure they finish what they start.

It’s much better to have an imperfect, finished product than a good, yet half-baked one. I think it’s important to focus on the finishing aspect, even if it means your work sucks. Otherwise you’ll end up starting things and never really finishing anything.
