The New York Mets schlepped onto the field last night, as if the memories of the previous World Series was on their minds. For one, it’s likely Yoenis Cespedes still has the thoughts of his fast automobiles (from Spring Training)and big payday on his mind; otherwise, he may have been more focused, and actually would’ve caught the fly ball in the first inning.
Overall, the difference between the Mets and Royal’s style of play is quite remarkable. The Mets rely on power to score runs, and for starting pitching to keep their opponents scoring to a minimum. Whereas, the Royals have speed, contact, the bullpen and intangibles. Furthermore, during the game the Mets struck out numerous times, and went one-for-ten in these opportunities. Whereas, the Royals, went three-for-seven and only struck put three times the entire game. The Mets had one extra base hit, a double by Michael Conforto; whereas, the Royals hit nine singles. Many of these bas hits were week ground balls which found openings through the Mets infield defense. It was not as if the royals annihilated the Mets pitchers; they just play with an old-school approach which reads, “If the ball’s put in play, anything can happen.”
The silver lining of this all is the Mets turned three double plays, a testament to their new and improved infield defense. The Mets will not have to worry about Daniel Murphy, and his lack of focus in the field anymore. Now we have Yoenis Cespedes for that… Only kidding:) Also, although Matt Harvey wasn’t perfect, he still showed a decent performance on the mound, despite a blood clot being removed from his bladder a few days earlier.
So fellow Mets’ fans, no need to worry. We still have 161 games to go!
