This is an entry for the April Writing Challenge from The Writing Cooperative, which was to write a poem. Please clap if you like it!
This isn’t what I ordered.
I asked for joy, which you brought,
But I wanted the devastation on the side.
So that I could dip into it on the rare occasions
That I needed the bitter flavor to bring out the sweetness in the joy.
But you’ve splashed devastation all over everything.
There isn’t a single bit of uncontaminated joy.
I also specifically requested professional success,
Which is missing completely.
You got the family right.
But what good is that when everything else is wrong?
Please take this back,
And bring me what I ordered.
