The turbulent eighties.

How can we not forget this decade?

The decade of AIDS.

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto deliver killer performances in this dark, surreal medical thriller, for which they both won Oscars.

A low-budget sleeper.

Ron Woodroof, a macho Texan electrician, rodeo buff and raging homophobe, contracts AIDS and undergoes a journey of personal transformation in Buyers Club.

His doctors give Ron only thirty days to live.

Tough stuff.

But as a doomed warrior Ron demonstrates Texan grit as he battles the US government and the pharmaceutical companies and frantically searches for alternative drugs to fight his disease and help other stricken victims.

The drug companies behind AZT and the FDA naturally receive special treatment as Ron’s totalitarian opponents.

Buyers Club gets a special twist when Ron befriends Rayon, an eccentric transgender male who becomes his unlikely business partner. Together, this odd couple must stay one step ahead of the authorities when it comes to who has control of the cure for AIDS.

This is not your typical Hollywood movie.

Ron and Rayon both eventually die, but not before Ron undergoes a slow spiritual transformation that is both redeeming and moving.

So if you want to experience a stirring drama with maximum compassion and only a moderate amount of bullshit, watch this gem of a film and tell your friends about it.

Jennifer Garner is irresistibly cute as Ron’s struggling doctor
