The notion of a “safe space” comes from group therapy, where participants are encouraged to share uncomfortable, sometimes ugly, repressed thoughts and memories. A “safe space” is not a “happy place” where conflict is avoided. It is not a place one goes to “feel safe.” Quite the opposite, really. It is a place to confront problems that are often buried underneath layers of shame.

Outside of a professional counseling context, the term makes zero sense.
