HELP WANTED: A Guide to Help HR Communicate with Hiring Managers about New Hire Reqs

Longest. Medium. Title. Ever.

> This is a DRAFT of a tool to help HR communicate more effectively with hiring managers. Feedback wanted, please.

> The final version will be given away, 100% free

> This will be a letter-size PDF, but it doesn’t format well on Medium.

> Please share feedback, ESPECIALLY if you are or were (1) a hiring manager, or (2) an HR person who communicates with hiring managers about new hire requisitions.

The idea for the document below is to help people in HR communicate more effectively with hiring managers about new hire requisitions (i.e. new positions HR is being asked to recruit for).

The idea came to me while speaking with an HR rep at a very successful 50-person company in NYC (I was doing research for my startup). She mentioned that it’s not always easy for recruiters to extract the information from hiring managers, which they need to identify terrific candidates (especially those who aren’t obvious fits at first glance, but turn out to be wonderful).

My intention here is to get feedback from hiring managers and the HR people I’m hoping to help, and then give the final version of this away for free.

BTW, I don’t mean “free” as in, you don’t pay money, but you pay by giving your email (that’s not really free, is it?). I mean free, without any catches.

Like many things, this project is a battle between being comprehensive enough to be useful and succinct enough to be used.

Lastly, in the way of disclosure, some of the items below fit my personal ideas about matching the right people and jobs, so they also match elements of my startup, which is in this space.

Okay, here we go:

— END —

Thank you for reading and (if applicable) sharing constructive feedback.

I’m thinking of how to change this in light of Patty Mccord’s “You’re Hiring All Wrong” article.

I will read and consider every bit of feedback carefully, and make plenty of changes to reflect the best ideas. However, this will not become an “average of the group’s thinking” compromise.

It’s probably NOT a good idea to heart this, since it won’t apply to most people, but if you could share it with someone in HR or who is a hiring manager, so they can provide feedback, that would be great.

Gracias!

P.S. Robin Erickson’s “Surprising #1 Predictor of Talent Acquisition Performance” via Bersin by Deloitte reveals that the most influential predictor of TA performance outcomes is a strong relationship between the recruiter and the hiring manager. Read the interesting details here.

UPDATE: Will soon add something about Why this job is important” and “What you will learn on this job” (these ideas shamelessly stolen from Pascal Finette’s blog post: https://theheretic.org/write-better-job-descriptions.html )
