Lessons Learned From Food Inc. & Fast Food Nation
Food habits are something I have put a lot of thought into. I have cut out gluten, cut out carbs, cut out pork products, went keto, tried mindful eating. I have put a lot of thought into what I put in my mouth. But the one thing I never considered is going vegetarian. That is until I read Fast Food Nation and watched Food Inc.
Premise of Fast Food Nation and Food Inc.
Generally, I would write about one book or movie at a time. But there is so much overlap between the two of these. The overlap is so much that the author of Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser, is interviewed in Food Inc. Both focused on where food in America comes from, processed food. Some of the things I have learned:
- Most food can be tied to corn, which is one of the cheapest products to grow.
- E Coli is common amongst beef. The contamination is due to unsanitary conditions of cows before entering the slaughterhouse.
- Most chickens that are grown to be eaten can’t stand for more than a few steps at a time
- Fast food restaurants target children with the clown mascot, playgrounds, and toys with the meal.
- The farmers who grow food for fast food restaurants are pushed into practices that they know are bad for their farm.
