Entry #0: About Me

I moved around a bit when I was younger, but I mostly grew up in the Dallas, TX area. I did my undergrad at Northwestern, where I double-majored in Classics and Italian and spent my junior year studying in Bologna, Italy. I also have an MA in Classical Languages and Literature from Cornell. On the weekends, I teach ACT test prep classes for Kaplan Test Prep. I am also the Marketing GA at UIC’s Tutorium. In my free time, my favorite things to do are spend time with my dog, read, and play video games.

Here is a picture of my dog Midas helping our neighbors finish off a watermelon:

I hope to learn about how to design materials for the very beginning of an ESL course for absolute beginners. I am very interested in working with some of the underserved sectors of the population, such as immigrants and refugees. Often these people did not have an opportunity to plan ahead and start learning some basic English before arrival, so I’m curious about how to effectively communicate course objectives and content to students who hardly understand English.
