It was a relief when I first heard about impostor syndrome; it was such a revelation to learn that I was not the only one who felt that way. Since then it has shown up a few times more, always when starting a new job or gaining a new responsibility. I have learned to identify it for what it is, but it is not always easy to overcome it.
The best advice I ever got was during a Women in Physics workshop at the Institute of Physics (London). A speaker said that whenever she was confronted by a bout of Impostor Syndrome, she said to herself: “Good, I’m facing a challenge, this will make me grow”.
