Do Startups Have a Drinking Problem?
Sarah Jane Coffey

Appreciate your story, Sarah Jane. Mine is somewhat similar. I don’t work in start-up culture, but in academia and publishing, two cultures also noted for lots of drinking. I see the prevalence of alcohol as, in part, a failure of imagination. Happy hours and meeting for drinks is just an easy default setting for organizations and meetups. I have seen tremendous progress in awareness and acceptance of addiction in these cultures, and many workplaces how have drug- and alcohol-free policies. Most state university employees are not permitted to drink on campus or at state-funded events. So alcohol-soaked organizations can change, but it takes time and energy and courage like yours.
