Couldn’t you also argue that all the money we spent on MP3s from the iTunes store etc.

Yes, absolutely. In some cases it’s better (no physical waste unlike CDs). In other ways, it’s worse (the MP3 heyday was even shorter than that of CDs). Some people still feel better about “owning” music, but I think that feeling is quickly fading, for better or worse. Given the DRM (in the early days) or other proprietary aspects of the digital formats, did you really own it anyway?
