When you need a pick-me-up

Sometimes it is okay to cry.

It is okay to cry when you think you have your life under control, and suddenly realize it’s slowly spiraling out of hand.

It is okay to cry when you have finally found a way to manage chronic pain, and then a new acute pain catches you off guard, and leaves you defenseless and vulnerable.

It is okay to cry when you want desperately to talk to someone who understands, but realize none of the people you see each day can relate. It is especially okay when you scroll through your phone contacts searching for a friend to listen, and realize not one of them will understand either.

It is okay to cry when you must keep missing work, school, or social events, and instead spend hours at home and in bed.

It is okay to cry when you feel guilty asking friends to help with basic necessities like grocery shopping, transportation, or house cleaning.

It is okay to cry when the thought of a “normal” life seems so distant and unattainable.

So then you cry. And take a deep breath.

And reflect on how life ebbs and flows. Highs alternate with lows, sometimes yearly, sometimes daily. And you realize you are at a very low spot right now. But it will get better — it always does — it just takes time, patience, and the determination to never give up.
