How to Change the String on a Lawn Trimmer

Step 1
Detach the retaining ring from the trimmer (either by unscrewing it or pushing in the tabs) and remove the spool.
Step 2
Measure out the appropriate length of string. Depending on the spool size, the right length could be anywhere between 15 feet and 25 feet long. If you own a double-string trimmer, measure out two pieces of string with identical lengths.
Step 3
At the center of the spool, you will see a small hole. This hole holds the string in place during its winding and unwinding. Insert about half an inch of the string into the hole before you start winding it around the spool.
Step 4
Wind the string in the direction indicated by the arrow engraved on the spool. To avoid tangles, ensure that the line is wound from side to side before introducing. Wind it until you have about 5 to 6 inches of string left in your hand.
Step 5
Use the notch at the edge of the spool to hold the string in place while you replace the spool in the trimmer. Once done, feed the remaining length of string through the line exit hole in the trimmer head then firmly replace the retaining ring.
