Humans of Matthew House — Ephrem Mulugeta
Ephrem joined the Matthew House family as a summer student in 2016 and is back this summer. At 19 years old, Ephrem is a second year student at the University of Western Ontario. Currently working as an administrative assistant in the operations department, Ephrem assists management with various day-to-day resident needs.

Helping others has always been on Ephrem’s heart. A flyer at church advertising summer internships at Matthew House caught his eye, “I’ve always wanted to make a difference for someone who was less fortunate than I was, and this was my opportunity”.
Four years ago, Ephrem and his family immigrated to Canada from Botswana, and he is intimately aware of the struggles one faces settling into a new country. Matthew House afforded him not only rewarding employment but the opportunity to assist individuals who have had a similar journey in a holistic environment. “As soon as you walk through the doors of Matthew House, you immediately feel the welcoming love. For me, Matthew House represents the living embodiment of the beauty and diversity in Toronto.”
