Jan has been volunteering at Matthew House for 3 years . She discovered the Canadian documentary, “Everybody’s Children” which featured Matthew House and was so intrigued by the presentation that she wanted to become part of the community.

Our Dundas home is just a few blocks from her place, which has afforded her a plethora of opportunities to connect. Helping the residents has become a passion for Jan, and has become an important part of her day-to-day life. “I have always been the “mamma” wherever I go and…I have no qualms in asking for anything on their behalf. I look for little moments of joy that I can share.” One such moment was taking Hassan, a newly arrived refugee, to a modern German Opera. The healing power of music brought such a sense of wonder and peace to a weary traveller.

Providing residents with connections and interaction in the community is one way Jan gives to Matthew House, but Jan also comes every Thursday to cook lunch. At Matthew House, Thursday is burger day. Thanks to the consistent effort from Jan, residents, staff and other volunteers get to enjoy a weekly barbecue.

Matthew House has become a place for her to connect in meaningful ways with refugees, to help ease their struggles and enrich their lives through her love of music and drama. Thank you for all you do, Jan!
