Humans of Matthew House — Warren McDougall
It was 2010 when Warren learned that his sister had lost her fight with mental illness. Her passing caused Warren to reflect on how he was giving back to his community.
Warren had been working as an IT professional for years at Recall. After deep soul searching, he realized he wanted to give back through volunteering. Warren began by supporting a Syrian family who arrived to Canada through a sponsorship program. After learning of the additional struggles non-sponsored refugees experience, he looked for opportunities to give back to refugee claimants.

Warren’s pastor connected him to Anne Woolger; the Founder of Matthew House. During the first few days of the New Year, Anne mentioned to Warren that Matthew House was looking to fill the Night Manager position, which was a perfect fit for him. “I wanted to expand my volunteering horizons, and giving my time to an important cause like Matthew House was ideal. They provide such great support for so many refugees.” Warren moved into Matthew House on May 1 of 2017, assuming the duties of the Night Manager.
Warren values living alongside so many people coming from all different walks of life. “These people all come from diverse backgrounds and all have different stories. It’s amazing to see how people who have been affected by such unfortunate circumstances are so optimistic and thankful to be where they are, it’s truly amazing.”
Matthew House has become home for Warren, and is a sanctuary that he shares with staff, residents and others alike. He has been able to give back to the refugee community, while building meaningful relationships within our home. Thank you for all you do, Warren!
