What is Home Economics?

Home Economics class or “Home-Ec” is a class that teaches life skills to high school students. This class taught students a wide rance of things from cooking and sewing to budgeting and taxes.

Why Was Home Economics Removed?

Many people believed it was removed because it was thought to only teach cooking and sewing to young women. The reality is, this class was mostly cut due to funding issues. It was also thought that some of the things taught were not relevant to most students at the time. Most students did not care how to budget therefore the information would not be retained by students taking the class.

How Do We Bring Home-Ec Back?

First, the name “Home-Ec” should be changed across the board to something more universal. Some schools have already adopted this idea, and now call the class Family and Consumer Science. Next, the attitude toward the class must change. This is not just a class for women. It is a class for anyone wanting to be successful in the real world. Life after high school can be scary. As parents, it is our responsibility to make sure our kids have those tools they need to be the best they can be.
