I am White. I am Mexican. I am a Latina. I am an America. I am someone with a voice, a brain and big heart. I am a girl who did not go to the best schools because she grew up in a low income district. I am a girl who was a struggling reader. I am a girl who found herself wondering why we learn about only “some things” in history and not everything in history. I am a girl who wants to learn more and not be limited due to the economic status of her family and the area around her. I am a girl who wants to get the same education as everyone else and learn about what matters in this world and in life.

My name is Mia Martinez and I am a senior at Marquette University. Growing up, I did not go to the best schools or have the best experiences with my teachers. I knew that the teachers were doing the best they could but unfortunately the lack of resources and funding, affected us all. It was not until high school where things started to change. My classes and teachers were a lot better and the learning environment was way better as well. I can remember US Government and when my teacher would allow us to hold our own elections and vote. I remember classes being very engaging and doing activities that implemented the material to ensure our understanding and learning of the material. I feel that these types of things really do make a difference and can shift the classroom dynamic as well.

From my experiences, I know that I want to be the best teacher that I can be. I want to be an example for minority children. I want to be encouraging, helpful, friendly, loving and also strict when needed. I hope to be able to build long lasting relationships with my students and their families and show my support to each and every one of them. I want to be a positive adult in my students lives and show them the power of being educated. It is so important for children to know that no matter where you come from, anything is possible. I hope to set an example for my students and help them reach their goals. There is no goal to small. I know the road of a teacher is not easy, but it is one that I am proud to be on and one that I hope to leave a positive impact on.
