It Is Never To Late To Be What You Want To Be
Remember when you were young your parents or family members would ask you the question? “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Back then you either knew the answer or you didn’t. It is also possible that you still don’t know what you want to be. You are a working progress so that’s why, it is never to late to be what YOU want to be.
What do you actually want to be? What do you want to accomplish in life? Where do you see yourself in ten years? These type of questions can be overwhelming when thinking about it or even when you are asked on the spot. However, you will come to point where you will have to start thinking about it and your future. To some people this might happen during your last year of high school. That’s when you start thinking about college and what course to take. Thinking about your future, making hard core decisions and choosing the right course is not an easy task. It’s something you will have to start thinking about months ahead, years ahead even. It is very important to know what you want to do in life. Now, saying this may sound easy but believe me I know it is not, at all. The core of this blog is for you to understand the importance of knowing and choosing what will make YOU happy.
Confucius once said “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”. I am firm believer of this quote. If you are able to have fun during working hours and it does not feel like you are working because you are doing enjoying it so much, in my opinion is the best feeling ever. All of this starts during your college years. The knowledge you gain during college will shape you to be who you want to be in the future. And eventually you will end up in a place you will call “the best place ever”. This can happen either right after graduating or years later. I also believe once you start working, then you will see and feel how it is to work in the field you have chosen. Nowadays it is difficult to find a job let alone a job you love doing. But I do know it is possible and your “calling” is out there. Some people settle for comfort instead of happiness. I can’t blame them especially in this economy. However, even if you settle for comfort make sure it makes you happy and whatever it is, may it be a good reason for you to wake up in the morning. Facts states that if your job is fulfilling your needs, your intrinsic and extrinsic motivators will balance out.
Another quote I believe in is “do it with passion or not at all”. My choice of changing careers in an early stage of my life was because of this quote. I came across this quote when I was twenty two years old and working as a nurse in a hospital. Growing up I was surrounded by family members working in the medical field. Which means, during family gatherings that’s all I would hear. You would think it was not my choice to study Nursing, but during college I ‘learned’ how to love my future career. Learning how to love your future career is indeed possible but it can be difficult. It is almost the same as ‘forcing’ yourself to love something you are not sure of. I gave it a chance and worked for three years in the field. I ended up loving it. I gave it all, I did it with passion. However, it still felt like I was missing something. It was then when I saw the quote and realised that I love being a nurse but it was not making me happy. After my realisation, I sat down and thought about my future, carefully. I asked myself the simple question, “what makes you happy?”. I wrote down all the reasons for my happiness and I made the decision to go back to school. Easier said then done? That time it was. Everything happened in a split second. I did not think about it for too long and I made a hard core decision.
This means that right now I am back in college, but this time I am doing it for different reasons. My future, my happiness. Afraid to go back to school? I had the same feeling, but it only lasted for three days. Two years after making the decision I am happy to say, I learned so much from it and even though my current course is totally different from Nursing, that’s what I like the most. I am learning new things and at same time I am loving it.
Referring back to the core of this blog, it is never to late do what makes you happy. It is never to late to start a new course. It is never to late to be you who you want to be. You can either be graduating or working for five years now, just make sure you are doing it all for the right reasons. To make yourself happy.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, just make sure you learn from them :)
