Who are we, when we go online?

Having an online identity can be different from having your real identity in real time. Going through the online world and making yourself known out there is like proving security who you are with a passport or I.D.

To make ourselves known out there depends on the context we publish about ourselves. When I worked for a company they asked me if I had a Facebook account and me as a digital marketing student did NOT have a Facebook account. I know you are thinking “What? How can you not have Facebook?” The reason being is I was worried about making myself known, revealing my identity. It is like superheroes who never show who they are and live a “normal” life with a job, I mean look at Clark Kent aka Superman. I was told I should create a “dummy” account, which is a profile that looks like me but isn’t. This can protect a person from many dangers online.

There are challenges we have to deal with when it comes towards online customer identity and they are the following:

More people get recognised through the online world by social platforms like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. This can be done by the amount of followers and the information you fill out, this can be invasion of privacy.

Another challenge I have seen is instead of looking for a person in the lets say the telephone directory we look them up on Facebook and then we send them a friend request. When I receive a friend request from someone I don’t know I look at their mutual friends.

Another sad challenge would be people hide who they are on Skype instead of meeting the person in real time and have a real conversation with a real person. Instead people talk on Whatsapp or any other social media platforms and pretending to be someone they are not.
