Van Life Expenses as an Indie Hacker
This week, I wanted to breakdown my monthly expenses as a van lifer who is indie hacking away on my latest SaaS product: SpeechBreeze.
What this doesn’t account for:
Larger purchases: The above budget doesn’t include my large expenditures in the year. For example: A new backcountry ski setup.
Nuances:
Heating: I use propane to heat my van, and the monthly expenditure I’ve provided is an average estimate. In some months, such as June through August, I spend nothing on propane. However, during some winter months, my propane expenditure can easily reach $300.
Fun: For me, fun takes place outdoors through running, backcountry skiing, biking, and camping. I spend money on gas for these activities. Otherwise, I don’t spend money on things like movie tickets, concerts, etc.
Van Payment: Van is payed for.
Health Insurance: Since I left my job to go full time indie hacking I was able to obtain medicaid.
Will I Continue?
For $1,800 a month, I get to enjoy a really good standard of living while moving my adventures to new and exciting geographical locations, meet incredible people in the towns I roll through, and have ultimate autonomy.
This weeks letter is short as I’m playing around with talking about vanlife and what some of the realities of it are.
What did I miss? What would you like me to share about van life?
