#12 — The Body’s Wisdom
We need to listen to our bodies, and meet its needs. Let’s get physical, and primal. If you’re tired — rest. If you’re sick — recover. If you’re energetic — move.
Our bodies don’t respond to a gym class schedule or early morning alarm clocks — they are not machines fuelled by will power. You’re body will tell you what it needs, not the other way ‘round. You just need to listen more closely.
It reminds me of Desmond Morris’ book, ‘The Human Animal’ which I read as an impressionable teenager. We’re Iike rats in a cage, Homo sapiens in a concrete jungle, separated from nature and its rhythms and starved of the connection we need to thrive. The least we can do is listen to what our bodies are telling us and meet these basic needs.
Rest, sleep, move, run, play, slow down, relax. It’s hard in a culture that celebrates the #hustle and #grind, it seems like the earlier we wake up and the longer we work the better we’ll be. No. How about we check in and allow our behaviour to be guided more by what our bodies are telling us? Sleep in, do less, slow down — that’s a movement I could get behind.
Be driven by what feels good, what feels right, not by a schedule.
