More of Nerja
The most famous tourist attraction around Nerja are the caves. They are actually a 4 km walk from where we stay, or you can go on an organizedtour. We walked, which was more like 5 km. The caves are near a village called Maro. We got to the caves around 2 pm and found it was quite commercialized. Line ups all over the place and bus loads if old people in their 60 and 70s on bus tours (could have been us), 10 euro to get in. No flash photos and it’s dark in there, and then the insult, you can not see the drawings in the caves because they are protected. A bit disappointing but hey ‘we have to save the world’ conclusion. On our worldly trips we have seen fascinating caves, if you have not seen caves before this is a start.
On our walk to the caves we took a detour to the old road to Maro. This road took you down to a ravine and there up on the wall of the ravine were many caves with people living in them. They had even cultivated the land around the entrance to the caves. One even had a washing line full of clothes waving in the breeze. What a bizarre site. We where advised by other people rambling that these cave dwellers are quite harmless and the authorities are aware and leave them be as they are harmless people. (Good to know) . While down in the ravine we met a couple of cyclists not far off our age group, Angela and Frank. Angela was in training for an iron man hence the cycling. They were from Northumberland and got a last minute trip to Nerja , 130 pound or 220 $ Canadian, flight from Newcastle, and hotel with half board which meant breakfast and evening meal. Oh! For UK deals!!. We met them later that evening and got on like a house on fire … to the extent of a mega hangover the next day 🍾🍻😰.
We have found 2 great places for entertainment while we have been here. The NERJA CULTURAL CENTRE. During the month of February there are so many live shows on from. Jazz bands , chamber jazz, classical guitar, flamenco, opera, you could never get board. Also a hotel called THE PUI HOTEL you have to be 50 + to stay there , no problemo !! This hotel has a different act on every night, and strangely enough none of it is hip hop !!
Other than that we have had a day trip out to a white town called Friglliana built high up in the hills on a slope that looked like 30 degrees and felt like 60 degrees after walking it.
Nerja has been a great relaxation place for us plenty of walks , plenty of fresh fish and meditation for TRISH to say nothing of the bonding therapeutic relationship I have found with Rooney, The rumour is we may be coming back next year. Now our 24 days are up and we are off to Malaga for a week before flying off to CapeTown. See you in Malaga. M and T x
