Product Ideation: Task Analysis for Painting a Room

Imagine yourself as a student living in an apartment with your roommates. You walk by the living room and you notice the walls are in a desperate need for a new paint job. There are probably a lot of things going through your mind. What kind of tools do I need? What color should I pick? Are my roommates okay with it? Wait... is my landlord okay with it? What do you do?

For my assignment for UX academy, I learned about the process called Task-Analysis mapping. Task analysis mapping is done when designers are trying to understand how someone completes a task. Because everybody is unique and have different ways to solving a problem, a task analysis map can be drawn.

So how would I solve the problem of painting the living room?
Here is my task analysis map.

  1. Analyze the problem. Decide that the living room needs a repaint.
  2. Call landlord and ask for permission.
  3. Ask Roommates. Discuss the Cost, Color and Materials.
  4. Research where you should buy the supplies. Local Store? Online?
  5. Buy the supplies and split the cost among roommates.
  6. Move any furniture out of the way. Tape windows. Keep the area ventilated to keep you and your roommates safe from paint fumes.
  7. Paint!
  8. Wait for the paint to dry.
  9. Move the furniture back to their designated places.
  10. Celebrate and congratulate yourselves for a job well done!
