I’m Michaela Dano, a fourth-year student at the University of Georgia set to graduate in Fall 2023. I’m pursuing a degree in Computer Science and a certificate in New Media.

When I first decided to major in Computer Science, I was unsure about what career path to take. After exploring the school’s course offerings, I realized that there were limited options, particularly in areas like game and web development. This made me consider transferring to another school until a friend told me about the New Media Certificate. I researched it and found that it offered a variety of courses, including web development. I chose the Dev Track and took NMIX 4020: Advanced Web Development where I learned about JavaScript and APIs, and created a musical game.

As for my elective courses, I enrolled in NMIX 4012: User Experience Strategy/NMIX 4012: New Media Topics, and CSCI 4300: Web Programming. User Experience Strategy introduced me to designing, creating prototypes, and conducting usability tests. During Web Programming, I gained an understanding of ReactJS and was introduced to full-stack programming. All the knowledge and experience I have gained in these courses will be helpful in my New Media Capstone in Fall 2023.

During my enrollment in NMIX 4210: New Media Industries, I gained invaluable knowledge on how to prepare for life after graduation, and the course also offered networking opportunities with guest speakers. As a result of my experience with the New Media Institute, I narrowed down my career path to front-end and software development. I am truly grateful for everything the program has taught me, and it has been my most cherished experience at the University of Georgia. However, due to time constraints, I regret that I couldn’t take more classes or pursue a major with the institute.
