I always loved soccer since I was a little boy. I used to tell myself that I wanted to be a professional soccer player and play in enormous stadiums. I never thought about the wages or how much money I could make because I didn’t really care about it, but growing up I learned money is a necessity in life because everything revolves around money. Playing professional soccer can give you a pretty penny. 6 figures a week. Yeah, a week, not a year. So what’s the controversy. Well some people think that athletes shouldn’t be making an absurd amount of money because all they’re doing is “kicking a ball around a field”. While this is somewhat true, it’s not like they are stealing the money, people pay to watch soccer players play. Being a soccer player is hard. There is a lot of commitment and intense work they have to do such as training, and they only have a short time to play soccer. When you think retirement you think of a age around 60ish. In soccer it is usually around their mid 30’s. An article called “Are Professional Soccer Players Paid Too Much?” by Jason Severiano Lampkin makes point that they are paid based on their performances and what they contribute to a team. He gave this scenario. Imagine you work for a company and you are getting paid minimum wage. You pitch give an idea to this company and it makes millions. Are you going to continue getting paid minimum wage or are you going to get a fair share of the million dollar idea? That is only one of 2 controversies. Besides the fact that athletes make more money than average, men make more money than women. In 2014, the men’s soccer team made 8 million dollars after getting eliminated in the first round of the world cup, while the women who won the world cup got only 2 million. Now the winners of the men’s 2014 world cup, Germany, received 35 million dollars for winning. Now does that seem fair, to some people it may be completely outrageous, but from a more financial perspective, women made more percent wise. Women received 11% of the revenue while men only received 7%. Some people may be confused, but the reality is is that there is no pay gap between men and women that purposely meant to be in unequal to one another gender. It is also common sense that the men’s soccer teams counterparts generate more money than women’s soccer teams.
