It is ever more apparent that when you mature, it really is a change in perspective. I used to think that you had to earn someone’s business by doing anything possible. Now I think business is like respect, it’s earned with trust. There are many other people that have already said what I’m saying now. Reinforcing their point is what I’m trying to do. Gary Vaynerchuk is the king of thinking this way.
When I was a kid I used to take my bike to Big E’s quick stop to buy candy. Sometimes I didn’t even buy candy but would just go there and hang out. That is because it was family owned and they knew me. Sometimes saying hello just to say it without any expectation in a genuine manner really goes a long way. I remember that and remembering someone in a positive way is key to having a strong relationship. Instead of cold calling, internet stalking, mass emailing; try to create a relationship. Get back in touch with customers (then see if you can be their friend) from the past or go hang out with some friends; make relationships. You may not get all the money in the world but you will be happier if you really want a relationship.
We are in the time where people realized something was missing from the equation of business. I learned the hard way when trying to get customer support over the phone or via online chat. You most likely don’t have a relationship with your cell phone provider or even your cable company. How do you feel about their service? Chances are you have no opinion. That is because you don’t have a relationship. If you did, maybe you would spread word that they treat you great or you really like their service and then refer your contact. I keep bookmarks on my phone of the places I like to eat, who fixes my car, fixes my house. This information gets shared at any opportunity not because I get a commission but these people have earned my trust. These are relationships with a real person. I’m happy to pay them the money because besides doing great work, I know them and trust them.
Make relationships, not money.
