He Didn’t Get The Job, But…
Conrad Hilton, founder of the Hilton Hotel empire, used to tell this story.
There was a poor Greek man who once applied for a job as a janitor at a bank in Athens. “Can you write?” asked the interviewer.
“Only my name,” said the Greek.
He didn’t get the job, so he borrowed money to travel to the U.S., the Land of Opportunity.
Many years later an important Greek businessman held a press conference in his luxurious Wall Street office. As the conference ended a reporter suggested that he write his memoirs.
“Impossible,” said the Greek, “I cannot write.”
Astounded, the reporter said, “Just imagine how much further you would have gone if you could.”
The Greek smiled and said to the lad, “If I could write, I’d be a janitor.”
