Just as the author’s grandfather made a logical error in saying that there should be a no-eating section — the no-smoking section is to protect nonsmokers from the smoke, but no one is harmed or even inconvenienced by popcorn fumes — he made a logical error in thinking that a prolonged fight would have been better for civilians.

The fight for Okinawa killed between a fifth and a third of the civilian population there. If the home islands of Japan had to be taken the same way, at least 15 million civilians would have died.

To put it another way, had atomic weapon not existed or had the US quailed at using them, the Holocaust would have be the second worst thing that happened in the early 1940's.
