The author’s premise seems to be that she shouldn’t pay more because her expenses aren’t her fault. A bad driver could presumably be more careful, take driving lessons, drive less, or not drive at all. No equivalent option is available to diabetics.
The consequence of this line of reasoning is diabetics and other people with disease lacking a behavioral origin should be treated at government expense. People whose diseases can traced to their own actions — HIV and lung cancer for example — should apparently be left to die.
