The Best Moments of Day 1 MARCH MADNESS

NONE OF YOUR BRACKETS ARE PERFECT IF YOU DO HAVE ONE PLEASE MARRY ME NOW.

On the eve of the NCAA tournament I had this thought:

“Wow, for once I think the first day of the tournament will be chill. My madness starts on Friday, not Thursday.”

WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG SO WRONG MIKE YOU IDIOT WHY YOU EVER OPEN YOUR MOUTH.

Here are the best moments of Day 1:

15. HOPEFUL OLD NOTRE DAME LADY

This was an extremely close game throughout the first half, then Notre Dame decided to start playing basketball and opened up a double-digit lead (on a sweet play I’ll show later). But then, Notre Dame decided to conduct their annual choke session AND HAD THIS SWEET OLD LADY LOOKING LIKE THIS BY THE END.

Unfortunately, Notre Dame stole all the luck of the lower seeds in the first game of the tournament.

14. Iowa State “GTFO” block

Why couldn’t the game have ended here? ISU was dominating UAB, punctuated by this awesome block. I’ve advocated that NCAA games should only be seven minutes long. Maybe this game will get things rolling.

13. UAB Twisting Alley-Oop

It was here where I knew this would be a game. UAB has some flyers.

12. NC State Putback Dunk

NC State decided that playing basketball in the first half was not for them which resulted in a 14-point deficit. LSU countered by not playing in the second half, so plays like this happened. A LOT.

More to come from this game.

11. Need a shoe? I GOT YOU BRUH.

There were lots of one-point game winners yesterday, but this was arguably the best game of the night next to Ohio State-VCU and Purdue-Cincinnati. Even the benchwarmers chipped in! With a shoe…

10. QUALLS FLYING MACHINE

Humans can’t fly yet but don’t tell that to Michael Qualls. This dunk ignited the Arkansas comeback against Wofford. See, the Arkansas bench knows how important two shoes are.

9. The Tar Heels Survive

Harvard was a Cinderella last year and almost pulled that card again, but the Heels stood strong in the last 30 seconds to pull out the win.

8. DeAngelo Russell is very good at basketball.

DeAngelo Russell, freshman point guard at Ohio State, potential #1 NBA draft pick, is very good at basketball.

Here he is doing some dribble practice before the game:

Why would he be doing this? Well… take a look.

Even though he didn’t hit the shot, this play was still awesome. I would even argue it’s better that he didn’t because they got the offensive rebound (UNLIKE IOWA STATE MY GOD HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU NOT GET ANY OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS) and drained another 35 seconds off the clock.

7. Jackson Razzle-Dazzle

It was close for most of the game, but then ND punctuated a massive run with this sweet play from Demetrius “Razzle-Dazzle” Jackson. Then Notre Dame almost blew it.

6. Chambers 4-point play

When UNC had a double-digit lead on Harvard I felt like I could rest. Ok, no Cinderella for Harvard this year thank god.

WRONG!

Harvard kept chipping away and chipping away at the UNC lead until it got to this point. My GOODNESS.

5. Cincinnati Around the World-tying layup

This was the PERFECT #8–9 matchup. Close game throughout and an epic finish.

4. NC State had no business winning, but luckily college athletes don’t make money so they decided to win anyway.

There was no way NC State was coming back. LSU was up big-time throughout 75% of the game. But as I was walking home last night, I opened up my March Madness app (buggy as hell by the way, OMG WE DIDN’T EXPECT THAT ALL THESE PEOPLE WOULD BE WATCHING ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT) to see that NC State has cut the lead to 3!

You won’t believe what happened next.

And his name is BEEJAY ANYA. Amazing.

Bonus Vines!

True gentlemen they have at NC State.

NC STATE WINNER KID!

3. Ron Hunter cannot be stopped.

If you don’t know the story, Georgia State coach Ron Hunter torn his Achilles celebrating their conference tournament win last week.

But the show must go on, so Ron Hunter is rolling around like this:

But wait. There is more.

2. Ron Hunter has a son, who plays for him, who is also good at basketball.

Baylor was up BY 10 POINTS with under TWO MINUTES TO GO. So the fuck what, this is MARCH MADNESS SON!

Baylor does everything they can to blow the lead and set up this moment:

1. Ron Hunter wins the NCAA Tournament.

Your son hitting a game-winning 3 > your health

This is why I love this tournament.

Bonus: The picture of Ron Hunter celebrating on the ground turned viral yesterday, so I jumped in on the fun. MY PHOTOSHOP SKILLS WERE FINALLY VALIDATED.

This was just Day 1! At this rate, I won’t see Saturday. Continue on for me world.
