I refuse to classify you

art by Michael McQuarrie

Like the stars shooting out above me
Blazing through the sky in unpredictable demise
Sometimes a glimmer of hope
An explosion of rage

Like the grass between my toes
Each individual blade springing beneath my step
Offering color, breath
A universe of details

You’re beyond classification, not another of my needs but an amazing cascade of humanity beyond my belief and comprehension
Classification is my way of saying — understanding — you are “this” to me, but that’s such a disservice
I cannot limit or define your reality with my contexts

You are fascinating and beautiful with a strength beyond the ages, a
strength to keep going, a strength to maintain, a strength to share and
support
You are more than a burning fire or a night under the stars, more than an unlocking of my feelings or a breaking of my barriers

I cannot cage you as I would a lion to hear your roar and stroke you into obeisance
I cannot grasp the embers you burn so hot with
I cannot hold you in my hands and say that you are this or that
I can only be here and take in as much of you as my heart and senses allow
