I don’t think we disagree Rebecca, I’m just saying that behind the rational discourse and discussion (which is helpful to children so they feel included/heard and because it helps them learn the whys and wherefores) there HAS to be a ‘because I said so’. Because if it is not you at the end of that chain it is going to be them. And you must know by now that when children do get into extended discussions of whys and why nots that often their motivation is not discussion but getting their way. I think children feel SAFE when there is an adult whom they put their trust in who can and will take charge vs just another child in the classroom. You’ve earned the right to be the one in charge. You HAVE to be in charge. Those are good lessons too.
