I hate to quote Star Trek but; “The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many”. It is actually, perhaps even unintentionally, a deep and IMHO proper ethical position. Without that as an ethical core the lives of the 5 people are not important either. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one” is a seemingly moral position that has been used since time immemorial to justify theft and slaughter. Lastly “Do unto others” is in fact a prime and rational guiding principle of behavior and has no relation to ‘The Trolley Problem”. Just because one person would willingly give their lives so that the other five may live doesn’t give that person the right to choose 1 life over 5.
