It is interesting how when a girl likes to play sports, doesn’t wear make-up and hangs out with the boys she is called a ‘tom boy’ and when a boy likes things we associate with girls he is either shunned, beaten up or called ‘gender creative’ (or worse). None of our multicultural/egalitarian/equality discussions or movements has included boys or men at all; same old gender expectations. We talk endlessly about the pressures put on young women because we ignore the pressures put on young men (that ultimately impact the rest of society) because the gender behavior, roles and obligations on men are axiomatic. The only way this or any other son will escape those is to either become or label themselves gay, transexual, transgender, polygender or any other term which people can then be comfortable “allowing” him to reject those behaviors. We are missing a step in our march to equality and that step is including men besides just asking them to “lean in”.
