Kobe Bryant — Infinite

What can I say that has not already been spoken? Kobe Bryant defined Southern California. Playing in LA. Living in OC. I grew up watching his career, beginning to end. He defines the Lakers. The best way to honor his legacy is to share our stories and memories.⁣

Bryant’s final playoff win

Lakers vs. Thunder. 2012 Western Conference semifinals, Game 3. The last playoff win as a franchise to date. Down two games, victory was needed. Kobe in vintage form scored 36 points, 18–18 from the FT line securing the W, 99–96. With my best friend in tow, we witnessed what made this gifted athlete tick. The desire to compete, dominate.

Kobe brought joy that can’t be measured. ⁣

Purple and Gold

He tore his achilles the following season and never made the playoffs again. No one knew how his career would unfold, or that we saw his last masterpiece when it counted most. While recovering from the injury, he became obsessed with the legend of Achilles, the warrior of Greek mythology who chose a short life that would be remembered for eternity over a long life of little consequence.⁣

Bryant changed the sneaker game.

Embracing low tops was unheard of until he made it the norm. Kobe VI will always be my favorite for its snakeskin design, plethora of colorways and comfort.

Nike Kobe VI

In 2011 Staples Center hosted the NBA All-Star Game. One night, thousands of sneakerheads like myself descended upon the Nike Vault for a chance to buy his coveted kicks.⁣

Nike Vault

When the ASG returned in 2018, Nike invited me to a media event. Bryant was retired by now, but clearly still ran LA. I sat on a hardwood basketball court mere feet from the Black Mamba. He reminisced about his playing days, the next generation of talent, and his historical 81-point game.⁣ It was obvious his second chapter of life (post-NBA, being a father and businessman) continued to fuel his creative mind and new goals were set. He wanted to be the best storyteller and was inquisitive to a fault.

Jalen Rose and Kobe Bryant

Outdoor hoops are a staple of basketball culture. From kids to adults, they play the game we grew up loving until dark. Bryant was famous for showing up to Rucker Park one summer in New York City, because that’s what he did. Proving he could complete with the elite street ballers at that time.

After his tragic passing, the purple and gold Lakers colors shined down on the infamous Venice Beach courts that Kobe would show up to for pickup games.

Streetball legends

From his final game. 60 points. Always love the hate.⁣

I miss you Kobe. I pray that you RIP with Gianna and the families lost ⁣💜💛
